Nambudripad's Allergy Elimination Technique was created by Devi S. Nambudripad, DC, LAc, MD, PhD (Acu.) in 1983 based on her combined knowledge of conventional Western, ancient Eastern and modern American Energy medicine.  NAET is a non-invasive, painless, and drug-free method of allergy elimination.  According to NAET, an allergy is defined in terms of what a substance does to the energy flow in the body.  When contact is made with an allergen, it causes blockages in the energy pathways called meridians. This blockage disrupts the normal flow of energy through the body's electrical circuits, which leads to a diminished state of health in one or more organ systems.  Dr. Nambudripad believes that most of the causes of common illnesses, like headache, back aches, joint pains, addiction, PMS, indigestion, cough, body aches, and many more are, in fact, undiagnosed allergies.  Dr. Nambudripad also believes that emotional allergies can occur when people have unpleasant experiences connected to eating specific foods.  NAET practitioners use neuromuscular senstivity testing while simultaneously passing under the patient’s bio-electrical field suspected substances one after another.

What Exactly is NAET?

During an office visit for NAET, the patient holds one substance inside a bottle in their hand while the practitioner pushes on the patient's opposite arm to test muscle strength.  If the patient is allergic to the substance they are holding, they will not be able to fully resist the practitioner.  If the patient is not allergic to the substance they are holding, they will display full muscle strength and be able to resist the practitioner pushing on their arm.  The practitioner will continue to test a series of substances held one at a time by the patient until the patient  has tested positive for an allergy to a substance by showing muscle weakness.  Once an allergy is found, it is treated on the spot in the office using acupuncture or acupressure.  The technique involves placing acupuncture needles or applying acupressure in key points along the body's meridians, typically along the spine.  Then the patient rests for 15-20 minutes with the needles in place (or without if acupressure was used) while holding the allergen in a bottle in the hand.  The patient is then told to refrain from the substance for 25 hours in order for the allergy elimination to take hold which involves a clearing cycle within the body.  The patient is then considered to be cured from the allergy.  After each treatment, the patient will return for subsequent office visits to identify and treat other allergies.  Only one allergy can be treated per an office visit.  It typically takes 30-40 office visits which can be done 1-2 times/week to completely eliminate all of a patient's allergies.  Surrogate muscle testing can be used to test young children and adults who are weak or incapacitated, in which the surrogate touches the skin of the person being tested while the practitioner tests the muscle strength of the surrogate.

Sounds Great, So What's the Problem?

When we hear "allergy" we typically think of things like milk, eggs, fish, and pollen.  Although Dr. Nambudripad considers all of these to be potential allergens, she also believes that vitamins and minerals can cause allergies.  During her personal treatments, she diagnosed herself with allergies to  vitamins A, C and B-complex (a total of 10 out of the body's 13 vitamins), calcium, and sugar.  Never before have vitamins been known to cause allergies, and are in fact necessary to maintain a healthy, well-balanced diet.  If you are thinking about undergoing NAET, you should consult your physician first.

Allergens Tested for During NAET

Dr. Nambudripad believes that the order is very structured and must be followed exactly because one food group is usually linked to the subsequent one, and that clearing of one allergen could potentially eliminate the need for treating another allergen group further down the line.  Here is the order of the potential allergens tested:

  • BBF
  • Egg Mix
  • Calcium Mix
  • Vitamin C Mix
  • B-complex Mix
  • Sugar Mix
  • Vitamin A Mix
  • Iron Mix
  • Salt Mix
  • Mineral Mix
  • Grain Mix
  • Yeast Mix
  • Acid
  • Base
  • Hormones Mix
