Cloves are actually the dried buds of a clove tree.  The clove is an evergreen tree that is 15 to 30 feet tall and is native to the Philippines, India, Sumatra, Jamaica, the West Indies and Brazil.  The leaves of the clove tree are more than 5 inches long and its flowers are red and white and bell-shaped.  The active component of cloves that is predominantly used in alternative and complementary medicine is eugenol oil.

Biologic names: Caryophyllus aromaticus, Syzygium aromaticum, Eugenia caryophyllata
