Cold laser therapy is a cousin of acupuncture where a laser
is used, instead of needles, to stimulate acupuncture points and influence the
flow of energy through biomeridians. Acupuncture traditionally involved the
insertion on needles at specific points on the body to access the merid ians of
the body. Once inserted, the needles are stimulated either by spinning, flicking, or by connecting them to an electric current via a battery pack.
(Traditional acupuncture will not be discussed further in this article.

With cold laser therapy, the laser replaces both the needle and the need for
stimulation with light. The major draw of cold laser is its non-invasive
nature (no needles in the body) and the
ability of the patient to administer the therapy themselves, either in the
office or at home, once the proper acupuncture points are identified. Cold
laser therapy is also referred to as low-level laser therapy and
Photobiomodulation.
