Colon hydrotherapy, also known as a colonic, is an ancient procedure that some report dates back to the Egyptians in 1500 B.C.  Today the technique has been modernized.  It involves inserting a plastic speculum through the anus and into the rectum.  The speculum is connected to tubing that instills purified water into the colon (large intestine) and removes the dirty water containing fecal matter and debris.  In the United States it is performed by licensed hydrotherapists who are trained to facilitate the process in a professional manner.
