No specific dangers are inherent in the treatment of oral galvanism, although the removal of preexisting fillings in the treatment of oral galvanism could be construed to be a danger if poor patient outcomes are associated with this. The device used to measure oral galvanism, the "Rita Meter" or Amalgameter, appears to be fairly harmless.

The primary danger in the treatment of oral galvanism appears to stem from the fact that Dr. Huggins marketed his Amalgameter as a tool useful for the identification of the need for removal of dental fillings. However, the findings in this case were totally unwarranted and no scientific evidence existed then, or exists now, to suggest that this machine can do what it claims to do. Consequently, the machine was pulled off the market for being "a medical device for which there was no approval for manufacture or marketing".

A Biomeridian Testing Machine, can pick up the presence of "oral galvanism".
