The average diet is composed of approximately 10% protein, most of which comes from dairy, grain and highly saturated-fat meats. In Paleodiet protein calorie intake should be about 30-35% of the total energy consumed. Most Americans get about 40% of their energy from fat. This percentage is the same in the Paleodiet, but the TYPE of fat is very different. An emphasis is placed on unsaturated fats, minimizing saturated and trans-saturated fats. Also, ω-3 type unsaturated fats are preferred, with an ideal ratio of ω-3 to ω-6 being in the 1:1 or 1:3 range – in contrast to the current 1:10 ratio in the common diet. Carbohydrate intake comprises about 25-30% of the intake in the Paleodiet. Preferred sources are fruits and vegetables, with processed sugars, grains and legumes sources discouraged and minimized. Most people average 50% of their calories from carbohydrates, this is twice as much as the Paleodiet recommends. In addition to the metabolic effects of carbohydrates, they also have a significant effect on dentition. Many believe that they epidemic rates of dental disease are directly related to the high amount of processed sugars and grains that are so rich in regular diets. Lowering carbohydrate intake and eliminating refined sugars should (in theory) reduce the rates of dental disease. In summary:
The Paleodiet also represents some other subtle differences in food choices. Our ancestors would not have had access to the salt-filled sauces and processed foods that we devour today. By eating a Paleolithic based diet, the balance of salt can be restored. Also, dairy products are a recent addition to the food choice for humans. Other than during infancy, dairy intake would have been nearly non-existent during the paleo-times. Avoiding dairy products is part of the Paleodiet and many conditions like lactose intolerance and milk protein allergy can be avoided.
