CAM Therapies in Children
In February 2008,
the American Academy of Pediatrics completed a review of Complementary and
Alternative Medicine (CAM) Therapies being used within the pediatric population.
The following are some common trends that they found:
Children
& Adolescents spent $127 million on CAM Visits and $22 million on remedies in
1996
Certain
Pediatric Population utilize CAM therapies more (~70% of Children with Special
Health Care Needs & homeless Adolescents)

The pediatric populations that use CAM therapies the most include children with
asthma, ADHD, autism, cancer, cerebral palsy, cystic fibrosis, inflammatory
bowel disease, and JRA.
Most
pediatric patients who use CAM therapies also continue to see their regular
physician
The
majority of patients (or parent's of patients) using CAM therapies did not tell
their primary care doctor about it.
