Pediatric nutritional supplements and CAM therapies have become more common within the pediatric population. It is important for pediatricians and parents alike to be aware of these current trends to understand their implications and role to protect the health of children. This website has attempted to briefly survey a few of these current trends affecting mainly adolescents and children with special health care needs.

  • Parents and children utilize CAM therapies and nutritional diets largely due to the lack of conventional medicine therapies.

  • It is important to note that many parents and children who use CAM therapies may not inform their primary care provider that they are using CAM therapies.

  • The populations of children that are most likely to use CAM nutritional supplements are vulnerable and easily persuadable by the false promises of CAM nutritional therapies. Unlike conventional that requires informed consent before beginning any medical treatment, no such consent is required for CAM therapies.

  • The evidence for nutritional supplementation in the pediatric population is limited. There is no evidence to support the use of  CAM supplements for the treatment of autism, Down syndrome, or adoloscents.
