As with almost any treatment plan, pet-facilitated therapy is not without risks. However, the risks are generally benign compared to other complementary and alternative medical modalities. If you have questions about pet therapy and your personal risks, talk to your doctor. 1. Potentially serious allergic reactions to various animal antigens 2. Infection/zoonotic diseases from animal contact. Immunocompromised individuals or those with open wounds are especially at risk. 3. Inadequate certification of animal as far as temperament/aggression testing 4. People with brain injury, developmental disability, or senility may provoke an animal without realizing it 5. Injury to patient or animal may occur from inappropriate handling, animal selection, or lack of supervision
