Reported Adverse Reactions include:

  • nausea, vomiting, dyspepsia
  • hypotension, dizziness
  • constipation
  • taste disturbances
  • peripheral edema
  • erythema
  • decreased sensation
  • decreased motor strength, weakness
  • acute hepatitis (jaundice, RUQ pain, elevated liver enzymes)
  • hypercalcemia

Interactions with Herbs & Supplements:

  • Calcium - Shark cartilage has a high level of calcium.  Using shark cartilage with a calcium supplement will increase the likelihood of hypercalcemia

Interactions with Drugs:

  • None known

Interactions with Foods:

  • Fruit Juice - Acidic fruit juices may decrease the potency of shark cartilage over time.

Additional Warnings:

  • Because shark cartilage has been shown to inhibit angiogenesis, pregnant and breastfeeding women should avoid taking this supplement.
  • Because shark cartilage has such a high calcium content it could be problematic in individuals with renal disease or individuals at risk for arrhythmias.
  • It should not be taken after surgery or trauma because its antiangiogenic effects could interfere with wound healing
