Reported Adverse Reactions include:
- nausea, vomiting, dyspepsia
- hypotension, dizziness
- constipation
- taste disturbances
- peripheral edema
- erythema
- decreased sensation
- decreased motor strength, weakness
- acute hepatitis (jaundice, RUQ pain, elevated liver enzymes)
- hypercalcemia
Interactions with Herbs & Supplements:
- Calcium - Shark cartilage has a high
level of calcium. Using shark cartilage with a calcium supplement will
increase the likelihood of hypercalcemia
Interactions with Drugs:
Interactions with Foods:
- Fruit Juice - Acidic fruit juices may
decrease the potency of shark cartilage over time.
Additional Warnings:
- Because shark cartilage has been shown to inhibit angiogenesis,
pregnant and breastfeeding women should avoid taking this supplement.
- Because shark cartilage has such a high calcium
content it could be problematic in individuals with renal disease or
individuals at risk for arrhythmias.
- It should not be taken after surgery or trauma
because its antiangiogenic effects could interfere with wound healing
