Welcome to the Creighton University School of Medicine
alternative medicine website on the use of soy protein in the treatment of
menopause.
Each day, approximately
4000 American women become menopausal,
............and this number is increasing as life expectancy lengthens and as
the number of women in this age group expands. In America today, if a woman
reaches the menopausal age of approximately 50 years, she can expect to live
another 30 to 35 years, and therefore spend one third of her life
postmenopausal.
This shift
from a reproductive to a non-reproductive stage of life is often accompanied by
an array of erratic symptoms that can and do greatly interfere with a woman’s
quality of life.
Because
the vast majority of these symptoms have been linked to a decline in the body’s
level of estrogen, much study has been placed into estrogen supplementation. In
light of recent scientific studies, many women have begun to question the safety
of estrogen itself and are exploring other options for control of their
symptoms. One such option is soy protein.
The purpose of this website is to provide an overview for the use of soy
protein for relief of peri- and postmenopausal symptoms. This site is for
health science students, medical professionals, and the general public. It
is not intended for use as a primary tool for diagnosis or treatment of
menopause.
