- A
fat soluble vitamin discovered in 1922. It consists of four tocopherols
and four tocotrienols.
Natural vitamin Es are known as alpha, beta, gamma and delta.
- Alpha-tocopherol is the most active form of vitamin E in humans. It increases to
150% its normal level in human pregnancies.
- Sources that
are rich in vitamin E include sunflower oil, walnut oil, peanut oil, olive oil,
corn, asparagus, oats, soybean, chestnut, and coconuts.
- It is
considered to be an
important antioxidant, and it helps stabilize cell membranes.
- Vitamin E
demonstrates good penetration into deep dermal tissue when applied topically.
- The
recommended daily allowance is 8 mg (12 IU) for females and 10 mg (15 IU) for
males.
