Vitamin E deficiency is usually characterized by neurological problems due to poor nerve conduction.

Those who are unable to absorb fat or have poor fat absorption may have a vitamin E deficiency.

 - Examples include: cystic fibrosis, Crohn's Disease, liver disease, pancreatic insufficiency, bowel resection.

 - These subjects may require vitamin E supplementation.

Vitamin E deficiency can also occur in premature and low birth weight infants. 

Another cause which is quite rare is abetalipoproteinemia. 

 - This is a disorder of fat absorption. 

 - Symptoms include muscle weakness and degeneration of the retina leading to blindness.
