American Medical Students' Experience In China
By Sean Miller, MD and Tammy Chen, MD
For the last rotation of our fourth year of medical school, we had the opportunity to experience how medicine is
practiced in China. Our mentor, Dr. Pang, introduced us to Traditional
Chinese Medicine as practiced by an internist. For the duration of our rotation,
we were invited to observe Dr. Pang as he saw patients in his
clinic at Guangzhou Traditional Chinese Medicine University. We kept
an account of some of our experiences in a journal and
also observed medicine being practiced by street
practitioners. Of course we also used the opportunity to do some sightseeing.
For a good account of the background
information on the theory behind chinese medicine, see the Traditional
Chinese Medicine pages authored by Dr. Colvin.

Dr. Pang is here on the right in his office
taking a radial pulse of one of his patients. The radial pulse and
examination of tongue are important parts of physical exam in Chinese
Medicine. |
