While the main focus of cranberry juice studies has been on
its power to prevent UTIs, other sources claim other beneficial effects of
cranberry juice consumption. These claims include:
Tumor Inhibition
The American Cancer Society’s Guide to Complementary and Alternative
Cancer Methods notes that ellagic acid, a compound found in raspberries,
cranberries, strawberries, walnuts, pomegranates, and pecans inhibits the growth
of tumors caused by specific cancer causing agents. This discovery was made
through laboratory and animal studies and is currently being studied on human
subjects at the Medical University of South Carolina Hollings Cancer Center.
Required dosages or preparations for this effect have not yet been determined..
Prevention of Nephrolithiasis
The theory proposes that quinic acid in cranberry juice increases the
acidity of urine and in turn decreases the level of ionized calcium in the urine
and therefore prevents nephrolithiasis. In order for this preventative effect
to occur, patients must drink two glasses of cranberry juice daily. Cranberry
capsules or powders may be used in place of juice.
Prevention of Influenza and Common
Colds
Cranberry juice provides patients with Vitamin C and antioxidants, which
both help to maintain and strengthen the immune system.
Digestive Relief
The acidity of cranberry juice assists the digestion of high fat content
foods and works to increase the appetite.
Diarrhea
This hypothesis purports that the proanthocyanidins in cranberry juice
function as astringents, which cause proteins to bind together and therefore
prevents bacteria from using proteins as a source of survival and energy.
Gingivitis Prevention
Cranberry juice may hinder bacteria from aggregating on teeth and by doing so it
may work to prevent build up of dental plaque.
Phencyclidine Excretion
Cranberry juice has been used in cases of PCP overdose to assist in
increasing the urinary excretion of the drug.
Coronary Artery Disease Prevention
Treatment of Dermatologic
Conditions
Acne, dermatitis, psoriasis, burns, wounds
Prevention of Bedwetting
Stress Relief
Treatment of Depression
