Side Effects

Typical doses

  • Mild gastrointestinal upset
  • Headache
  • Dizziness
  • Palpitations
  • Constipation
  • Allergic skin reactions

Large doses

  • Restlessness

  • Diarrhea

  • Nausea

  • Vomiting

  • Lack of muscle tone

  • Weakness

  • Excessive spontaneous bleeding, such as subdural hematoma, subarachnoid or parietal hemorrhage, and spontaneous hyphema (rare)

Drug Interactions

Anticoagulant or antiplatelet drugs 

  • Increased bleeding risk

Insulin

  • Secretion and metabolism affected, altering blood glucose levels

Thiazide diuretics

  • Increased blood pressure

Trazodone

  • Association with a coma by either acting on the benzodiazepine receptors with a GABA-ergic activity, or increasing the metabolism of trazodone to active GABA-ergic metabolites

 

Contraindications

  • Hypersensitivity to any ginkgo preparation
  • Children
  • Pregnant women
  • Patients with known risk factors for intracranial hemorrhage
