In conclusion, many complementary and alternative therapies (CAM) are being used for either single therapy or combination therapy for hypertension. In the US, as of 2002, over 40% of the population was using some form of CAM, and the annual expenditure on such therapies was estimated to be around $30 billion.12 It is important to point out that the supplements presented here, nutritional and herbal, all had significant side effect profiles, and use of any of these should be in cautionary fashion. This is especially true if taking other medications. Any drug interactions should be investigated before beginning to take a supplement. From all of the CAM therapies presented in this website, it seems as though Coenzyme Q10, the Mind/Body medicine techniques, and yoga might have the greatest benefit to patients. However, none of the CAM therapies presented had enough high quality research such as the conventional medical therapy for hypertension possesses. Therefore, none of them can be recommended on the same level as conventional medical therapy. |
