Neonatal
Caine (1992) reported that premature and low-birth-weight infants in NICU
have reduced hospital stays by an average of 5 days along with a 50% less mean
weight loss.
Standley and Moore (1995) determined that premature infants hearing music had
fewer occurrences of oximeter alarms during auditory stimuli compared to infants
listening to their mother’s voice alone.
Burke, Walsh, Oehler, and Gingras (1995) with 4 case studies showed a
reduction in stress related behaviors in infants following suctioning using
music.
Kaminski and Hall (1996) suggested that soothing music may decrease high
arousal states in newborns.
