Signs of Zinc Deficiency
Signs of zinc deficiency may alter
depending of the degree and duration of the deficiency.
Signs of marginal zinc deficiency
include decreased appetite, weight loss, decreased immunity, delayed wound
healing, sense of taste abnormalities, sense of smell abnormalities,
mental lethargy, decreased memory, and decreased spermatogenesis.
Signs of severe zinc deficiency include diarrhea,
alopecia (hair loss), severely depressed immune system, recurrent
infections, bullous pustular dermatitis, and severe mental disturbances.
Clinical uses of zinc include treatment of:
- zinc deficiency (i.e. in alcoholism)
- common cold
- recurring apthous and peptic ulcers
- Wilson's disease
- chronic diseases (i.e. diabetes, macular
degeneration)
- wound healing in burns, acne, HSV, gingivitis, etc.
