History and Uses of Kava Kava
The Kava plant comes from Oceania, the geographical area of Polynesia,
Micronesia, and Melanesia in the Pacific Ocean. Captain James Cook first
discovered native consumption during his Endeavour voyage from 1768 to 1771.
The root was prepared by chewing or grinding the roots, and then steeping
them in hot water. Kava was used to provide a sense of tranquility and
euphoria. It was a very important part of many island cultures and has been
used at most ceremonies including weddings, births and funerals. Kava root preparations today are used for its sedative properties to reduce
stress-related anxiety, muscle pain or spasms, insomnia, and restlessness.
