Bitter Melon

AKA: Balsam Apple, Balsam Pear, Bitter Cucumber, Carilla, Karela

Species: Momordica charantia

Active Chemical Components: steroidal glycosides, glycoproteins (alpha and beta monorcharin)

Traditionally Used:  Bitter Melon has been used to combat cancer, asthma, various skin infections, diabetes, GI disorders, and the common cold.

Uses Today:  Bitter Melon is used today to treat diabetes and as an anti-viral to treat HIV.

What you should know:  The alpha and beta monorcharins found in Bitter Melon have been shown to stimulate the uterus and may cause SAB or preterm labor with prematurity if used in pregnancy.  The steroid glycosides in Bitter Melon have a strong hypoglycemic effect.  Hypoglycemia in pregnancy can result in untoward effects for both the mother and the fetus.  The use of Bitter Melon during pregnancy is not recommended.
