Species: Matricaria recututa
(German and Hungarian varieties), Chamaemelum nobile (Roman and English
varieties)
Active Chemical Components:
sesquiterpene lactones, volatile oil (chamazulene), coumarins, glycosides
Uses: Chamomile is reportedly
helpful in the treatment of GI complaints, and is widely used for its sedative
properties. Chamomile is also used to treat menstrual complaints, migraine
headaches, hemorrhoids, and pharyngitis.
What you should know:
Chamomile is reported to be an abortifacient, especially the Roman and English
varieties, and its use should be avoided in pregnancy. Use during
pregnancy may result in SAB. Chamomile is also reported as a possible
teratogen in animal models. Its safety in pregnancy has not been
documented and its use is not recommended.
