Coltsfoot

AKA: British Tobacco, Bullsfoot, Butterbar, Coughwort, Flower Velure, Horsehoof, Ass's Foot, Fielhove

Species: Tussilago farfara

Active Chemical Components: pyrrolizidine alkaloids, triterpenes, flavenoids

Traditionally Used:  Coltsfoot was used centuries ago in Asia for the treatment of various respiratory disorders.

Used Today:  Coltsfoot is still used to treat respiratory disorders ranging from asthma to bronchitis.

What You Should Know: The pyrrolizidine alkaloids are considered teratogens.  They have been shown to induce hepatotoxicity in the developing fetuses of mice.  There is also a case report of hepatic veno-occlusive disease with subsequent infant death associated with maternal ingestion of pyrrolizidinealkaloid-containing herbal tea.The use of Coltsfoot during pregnancy is absolutely contraindicated.
