Comfrey AKA: Ass Ear, Black Root, Blackwort, Healing Herb, Slippery Root, Wallwort Species: Symphytum officinale Active Chemical Components: pyrrolozidine alkaloids, triterpene saponins, tannins Traditionally Used: Comfrey has been used in folk medicine for the treatment of rheumatism, bronchitis, pleuritis, and as an antidiarrheal. Used Today: Today, Comfrey is used topically for its anti-inflammatory properties on bruises, sprains, and strains, and internally for various GI inflammatory disorders. What you should know: The pyrrolizidine alkaloids are considered teratogens. They have been shown to induce hepatotoxicity in the developing fetuses of mice. There is also a case report linking hepatic veno-occlusive disease with subsequent infant death to pyrrolizidine alkaloids consumed by the mother in an herbal tea. The use of Comfrey during pregnancy is absolutely contraindicated. |
