Comfrey

AKA: Ass Ear, Black Root, Blackwort, Healing Herb, Slippery Root, Wallwort

Species: Symphytum officinale

Active Chemical Components: pyrrolozidine alkaloids, triterpene saponins, tannins

Traditionally Used:  Comfrey has been used in folk medicine for the treatment of rheumatism, bronchitis, pleuritis, and as an antidiarrheal.

Used Today:  Today, Comfrey is used topically for its anti-inflammatory properties on bruises, sprains, and strains, and internally for various GI inflammatory disorders.

What you should know:  The pyrrolizidine alkaloids are considered teratogens.  They have been shown to induce hepatotoxicity in the developing fetuses of mice.  There is also a case report linking hepatic veno-occlusive disease with subsequent infant death to pyrrolizidine alkaloids consumed by the mother in an herbal tea.  The use of Comfrey during pregnancy is absolutely contraindicated.
