Devil's Claw AKA: Grapple Plant, Wood Spider Species: Harpogophytum procumbens Active Chemical Component: Iridoid glycoside (harpagoside) Traditionally Used: Devil's Claw was traditionally used to treat GI complaints, arthritis, and as an antipyretic. In folk medicine, the dried root was used to relieve pains associated with pregnancy. Uses: Devil's Claw is used today as an antihelmintic, appetite stimulant, and to treat dyspepsia. What you should know: Some studies show that the herb has oxytocic properties and may lead to SAB or pre-term labor and prematurity. Its use during pregnancy is not recommended. |
