Fenugreek

AKA: Bird's Foot, Greek Hayseed, Trigonella

Species: Trigonella foenum-graecum

Active Chemical Components: saponins, alkaloids, coumarins

Traditional uses: Fenugreek has been traditionally used as a hypoglycemic agent; as a topical agent to treat skin disorders; to stimulate milk flow in new mothers; and, to treat gastric irritation.

Uses:  Today, Fenugreek is commonly used as a laxative, to treat various GI complaints, and as an appetitie stimulant in anorexia nervosa.  It is also used in diabetics for its hypoglycemic properties.

What you should know:  Fenugreek exerts an oxytocic effect in guinea pigs.  Its use in humans has not been sufficiently studied, but could potentially lead to SAB or preterm labor and prematurity secondary to its oxytocic effects.  Its use in pregnancy is not recommended.
