Motherwort

AKA: I-mu-ts'ao, Lion's-ear, Lion's-tail, Lion's-tart, Throwwort

Species: Leonursu cardiaca

Active Chemical Component:  triterpenes, iridoid glycosides

Traditionally Used:  Motherwort has been traditionally used as an antispasmodic, a cardiotonic, and as a sedative.  It has also been used as an emmenagogue.

Uses Today:  Today, Motherwort is still used as a cardiotonic for various cardiac disorders.  It is still also used as a sedative.  It is also used for the symptomatic treatment of hyperthyroidism.

What you should know:  Motherwort is a emmenagogue and a utertonic.  Motherwort is also associated with increased production of prostaglandins which are associated with the onset of labor.  Use of motherwort during pregnancy may lead to SAB or preterm labor and prematurity.  Its use during pregnancy is not recommended.
