AKA: Herb-of-Grace, Herbygrass, Rutae Herba, Vinruta

Species: Ruta graveolens

Active Chemical Component: quinoline alkaloids, furocoumarins, lignanes, volatile oils, psoralens

Uses: Rue is used an an abortifacient.  It also reportedly has sedative effects.  It is also used to treat a variety of sports injuries such as sprains and strains.

What you should know:  Rue acts as an abortifacient by altering the endometrial lining to prevent implantation of the zygote.  If taken during the preconceptual period or during conception, the fertilized egg will not implant.  Rue also has been shown to have mutagenic properties.  Whether or not rue exerts teratogenic effects on the developing fetus after implantation has ocurred has not been studied.  Its use while trying to conceive and during pregnancy is not recommended.
