AKA: Ague Tree, Cinnamon Wood, Ligum Floridium, Root bark, Saloop

Species: Sassafras albidum

Active Chemical Components: Safrole, volatile oils, tannins

Traditionally Used:  Sassafras was traditionally used for GI irritation and upset, an anti-pyretic, and a blood purifier.

Uses Today:  Sassafras is a common addition to various beverages.  It is used as a home remedy for various ailments.

What you should know:  Safrole, the main component of sassafras, crosses the placenta and acts as a teratogen. In studies, safrole administration to pregnant rats resulted in renal epithelial tumors in the offspring.  Safrole has also been linked to IUGR.  Its use during pregnancy is contraindicated.
