AKA: Adder's Eyes, Red Chickweed, Red Pimpernel Species: Anagallis arvensis Active Chemical Compounds: triterpene saponins, flavenoids, cucurbotacins Uses: Scarlet Pimpernel is used to treat depression, hemorrhoids, and various kidney and liver disorders. What you should know: The aqueous extract of scarlet pimpernel exhibits stimulation of the uterus in animal models and in in vitro studies of human uteri. Scarlet pimpernel also displays mild estrogenic properties in vitro. Because of its oxytocic effects, the use of scarlet pimpernel during pregnancy may result in SAB or preterm labor with prematurity, and therefore its use is not recommended.
