AKA: Starwort, Stargrass, Blazing Star, Ague Grass

Species: Aletris farinosa

Active Chemical Component: saponins, volatile oils

Traditional Uses:  In South America, unicorn root has been used to treat respiratory complaints including chronic bronchitis.

Used Today:  In the United States, Unicorn Root is used for a wide range of gynecological complaints.  It is reported to have estrogenic properties which may relieve some of the symptoms of menopause.  

What you should know:  The reported estrogenic activity of unicorn root may disrupt the normal progress of pregnancy.  There are inadequate studies of the herb's effects on pregnancy outcome.  Its use during pregnancy is not recommended.
