Reiki, pronounced
"Ray-Key" is a combination of two Japanese characters. REI
meaning "universal" and KI
meaning "vital life force energy" (also known as Chi or Prana in other
doctrines.) Together in Reiki, they create the concept of Universal Life force
energy or "Universal Life".
When the life force is
low or a person is stressed, there is a susceptibility to illness. When the life
force is high there is more resistance to invasion by infective agents. We are all composed of body, mind and spirit. Our life force is highest when the
elements of this trinity are in harmony with each other.
A Reiki Healer channels the energy via their upper energy centers, through their
hands to the recipient, restoring the natural balance/harmony of the
body/mind/spirit complex and activating the body's natural ability to heal
itself.
The
Reiki Principles were devised by Dr Usui to ensure that his students and the
people he healed continued to live peacefully and harmoniously.
There
are many different interpretations from the original Japanese. Here is a version
which follows the spirit of the original :
Just
for today, I will not worry.
Just
for today, I will not be angry.
Just
for today, I will live honestly.
Just
for today, I will respect the oneness of all life.
Just
for today, I will be kind to everyone I meet.
Just
for today, I will give thanks for my many blessings.
