Valerian can be taken in the form of a tea, capsule, tincture, tablet, externally as a bath additive.

Tea:  one cup several times per day.  Prepared by steeping 2-3 grams of the root in 150 ml of boiling water for 5-10 minutes and then straining.  Or bought commercially in tea bag form at specialty grocery stores and  nutrition supplement stores.

Tablets/Capsules:  For decreased sleep latency: 400-900 mg up to two hours before bed time.

For anxiety and restlessness:  200-400 mg 1-4 times standardized to contain 0.8% to 1% valerenic acid.

Topically:  Mix 100 grams of the root with 2 L of hot water, and then add to one full bath.

Due to variances in manufacturing commercial valerian root products dosages on bottles and packages of capsules and teas are not standardized.   Thus exact dosages are difficult to achieve and caution must be observed.
