Valerian
(Valeriana officinalis) is a flowering plant that is native to Europe and the temperate
regions of Asia. It is a tall perennial herb whose hollow stem bears opposite
leaves and fragrant white or reddish flowers. The parts of the plant the contain the
active components are the rhizomes (underground stems) and roots. The root is harvested in
September of the second year’s growth and then carefully dried at temperatures
under 40 degrees Celsius.
