Valerian (Valeriana officinalis) is a flowering  plant that is native to Europe and  the temperate regions of Asia.  It is a tall perennial herb whose hollow stem bears opposite leaves and fragrant white or reddish flowers.  The parts of the plant the contain the active components are the rhizomes (underground stems) and roots.  The root is harvested in September of the second year’s growth and then carefully dried at temperatures under 40 degrees Celsius.
