CHILDREN

Vegan diets are safe for children, but parents need to pay attention to the following to ensure their children are getting enough of the needed nutrients that can be deficient in a vegan diet:

Calories:       A good way to determine if your child is getting enough calories is if your child is gaining weight and height, since vegan diets tend to be lower in calories.

Calcium:       Important for development of strong bones, make sure your child takes calcium supplements and eat calcium-fortified foods.

Protein:       Make sure your child eats a good balance of grains and legumes.

Vitamin B12:       Make sure your child takes supplements and eat vitamin B12-fotrified foods.

Vitamin D:       If your child gets little sun exposure, consider supplements or food fortified with vitamin D (consult with physician before starting vitamin D supplements).

Zinc:       Make sure your child eats a good balance of whole grains, brown rice, legumes, and spinach.
