A brief patient history is provided below:

  • Infection in left thumb four months ago, self treated with drainage.

  • A few days later, developed severe right elbow swelling.

  • The elbow was warm to the touch.

  • X-rays reveled no joint destruction.

  • Diagnosed with septic bursitis by a Rheumatologist.

  • High dose Ibuprofen, oral antibiotics, and joint aspiration daily for 7 to 10 days.

  • Aspirated joint fluid, after being treated with antibiotics, did not show microorganisms.

  • Cortisone injection into the joint dramatically deceased the swelling.

  • Four months later, however, the elbow remains mildly painful, with occasional "jolts" of pain if bumped,  and has a blue discoloration on the lateral surface with "lumps" under the skin.
